Health Care Reform vs. Media control

Bill on Capitol HillFaced with great challenges, some people get to work and some people get to complaining. While standing inline at the post office, yes, I am mailing holiday packages this late, don’t judge me, I was not surprised to encounter my fellow procrastinators venting. What I was surprised at was the topic of this rage.
“Why on God’s green earth are those yahoos passing a simpleton bill to reduce the volume of television commercials, when the REAL work of health care reform is stalled?”

Now, I was raised to believe that you don’t talk politics or religion with strangers, but it was a long line, and I seriously considered offering a counterpoint to this conversation.

Let’s just follow the logic of do nothing if the big ticket priorities cannot be completed. Should we require doctors to not treat the flu if they haven’t yet found the cure for cancer? Should you resist using your windshield wipers if the streets have not been plowed?

I do not argue that health care reform is one of the highest priorities our elected officials face. However, does passing a non controversial bill really hinder the complex, multi-committee, and hotly contentious health care reform bill? OR Are people just looking for additional reasons to complain about the people we all got together and voted into office?

One last note, I am all in favor of lowering the volume on those television ads.
