Do you make New Year’s resolutions? What about personal goals? I rarely make New Year’s resolutions. My belief is that if you want to make change in your life, why wait until January 1 to do that. Exercise more, quit smoking, lose weight, learn new skills, improve relationships, read more books, volunteer – start today.
I do set personal goals, though. For me personal goals seem to be a lot like a monthly budget, they never quite go as planned. Maybe I simply haven’t found a goal setting tool that produces the magical results I strive for. Is there one out there?
Before you suggest a goal setting goal, here are my challenges with goal setting –
Balanced Lifestyle
I would define a balanced lifestyle as having peace with your relationships, family, career, finances, community, and personal well-being (physical, mental, spiritual). There is no such thing as a balanced lifestyle. We make choices everyday prioritizing one area of our life over others; thus, it is never in balance.
Time
Each of us has a finite set of time. We can’t be everything to everybody, but I also believe we are here to make a difference. Doing nothing isn’t an option.
Changing Priorities
The one constant is change (wow, profound); whether by choice or circumstances outside of our control, change happens. As a result of changes, our priorities constantly need to be adjusted. Maybe we have a deadline for a project that requires more of our time. Maybe a family member needs help. Maybe we have slipped off the exercise plan.
Energy Level
I am the most effective and productive when my energy level is high. I know that there are many factors that affect my energy level, including, getting enough sleep, eating healthier, stress, exercise, relationships, over committed, striving to contribute, etc. I constantly monitor my energy levels and try to determine what I need to do increase or keep my energy level high. Some days, this isn’t very easy to do.
I haven’t revisited my goals the last couple of months. In reflection of the past year, I believe I accomplished many things – including, launching this blog site. Now I seem to be tired, stressed, and stuck. What now? What next? I know I have a lot to be thankful for. I am truly blessed with a wonderful wife, daughter, family, and friends. I think I need to grind through some tasks that need to get done, get more sleep, and quit eating holiday treats. Hopefully, this will help me increase my energy level and I will be able to more effectively identify my next set of goals.
Or maybe I just need to find the magical goal setting tool that will make everything alright. Suggestions?
