It’s the little things in leadership …

Have you ever thought to yourself as you smiled at the sound of a child’s laughter, admired a drop of dew on a rose petal, or relished that first sip of steaming java, “The little things really do make life terrific”? I try to be attentive to those small moments and relish them. Lately, I have also noticed that it is often the little things that make for terrific leadership.

I am part of a group of people thrown together by circumstance. From different states and diverse histories, we have ended up stationed in the same squadron at a military base. When our spouses recently deployed, we who were strangers quickly became each others’ counselors, carpenters, career coaches, and companions.

As the weeks pass, I am increasingly inspired by my new friends. With their responsibilities doubled and their loved ones far from home, they have good reason to complain. Yet, no one has time for complaining! Their thoughtful actions keep them too busy. Here are just a few examples:

  • One friend drives another 70 miles to the doctor, just in case the sick friend cannot drive herself home.
  • Someone arrives home from a tiring journey to find her porch decorated with cheerful, fall mums.
  • A woman decides not to join a Friday night outing, but volunteers to babysit the kids of anyone else who wants to go out and recharge with friends.
  • Surprise cakes and candles brighten what could have been many a lonely birthday.

My friends would probably be surprised that I see bold leadership in these small gestures, things that they do without a second thought. It’s not the type of leadership that makes the front page of the newspaper. But, here’s the thing – kindness is contagious. Each time someone here sees a need and joyfully meets it, I feel inspired to do a better job of that myself. With each example, these friends lead each other to practice proactive, selfless service. As a result, we have created a community that is engaged, supportive and strong.

Are there little leadership opportunities passing you by? Seize them – you may find, as I have, that the little things in leadership make a very big impact.
