Partners in Policymaking seeks Recruits for Leadership Training Program

In 1990, the year the groundbreaking Americans with Disabilities Act was signed into law, I took part in a unique, eight-month leadership training program called Partners in Policymaking. This program was created by the Minnesota Governor’s Council on Developmental Disabilities and is for adults with disabilities and parents of children with disabilities.

I was one of about seven people with disabilities among a group of 40 or so parents. Already seeing myself as an advocate, the program taught me about the history and rich culture of the independent living movement and started me down the road to final acceptance, and even pride, in being part of a vibrant culture of my own — people with disabilities. I learned from pioneers like Ed Roberts and Judith Heumann and gained an appreciation for the small steps it often takes to start systems change.

The program is currently seeking recruits for its 29th class. Participants meet monthly, typically on a Friday and Saturday, starting in September 2011. Class members learn about topics such as the history of self-advocacy and the independent living movement, the value and benefit of inclusive education, Minnesota’s case management system and county services, how to meet and discuss policy issues with local, state an federal officials, and how bills become law.

There is no charge; costs for those selected to participate is covered by a federal grant.  The application deadline is July 22, 2011.
